10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, 4 Versions

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different focuses on how places are constantly changing and cities are becoming more and more similar. Places are emerging that could be anywhere in the world without a real local identity. This process is accelerated by technological progress, fast means of transport and communication, and the Internet.
In this sense, the 4 versions of 10.000 Moving Cities explore, how globalization creates “places without a local identity” – as described in Marc Augé’s essay Non-Lieux (1992) –, and stimulates a reflective attitude leant on a novel “immersive confrontation” with the digital society of our time.
In 10.000 Moving Cities all cities have the identical buildings. But the information on the building facades are always different. They are searched in real time on social networks about the chosen location. Not censored nor chosen by a certain community, rather produced by the public (user-generated content) including exhibition visitors maybe. In this way, each request also enables an active participation in the social movements of our time at a specific, self-chosen location.

All 4 versions of 10.000 Moving Cities deal with the same topic, but are technologically very different:

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, VR (Virtual Reality)
Virtual Reality Net-Based Installation

Using an HTC Vive Data Google suspended from the ceiling, the user can walk around a 6x6m space. People standing outside the installation can also see the user’s perspective in a projection. A 5.1 sound system transmits the sound into the exhibition space. Two sensors localise the user’s position and transmit it to the Unreal rendering engine, which teleports the user to the cities of their choice. The interface of 10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different is controlled solely by moving one’s head, focusing on a target city on a world map. For a selected city, posts from social networks are searched in real time and audio visualised in an abstract urban environment.

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, Mobile App
Mobile App as Interface for a Net-Based Installation

In the Mobile App on a world map, any city can be selected on a world map or searched by hashtag. Up-to-date and relevant social media posts are searched, processed and transferred into the virtual world. The animations follow the user’s movements: the virtual environment rotates when the device is turned. The sky appears when the device is tilted upwards. When the device is tilted downwards, the floor appears. The virtual environment is endless and can be navigated in any direction. Flight speed can also be adjusted. The sounds also respond to all these movements and flight speeds.
