Media Anatomy Seoul

Introduction of Media Anatomy

In 2020, a festival will be held around the Total Museum of Art in Pyeongchangdong, where technology and art meets. The exhibition theme, Media Anatomy, suggests time and possibilities to observe and re-examine the overall process of artists' work as if dissecting the very direct and close influence and form of the technology media itself.

One aspect of art, called media art, is a large part of today's human civilization and it shares the human thoughts and behavior of science and technology. was conducted in collaboration with various fields from the artists and curators to the research team, design team, archive team, photography and camera team and so on.

We have discussed the questions of the way of where technology and art will go together, and the problems of the current era. We considered artist studio a laboratory which works as the interface between both conflicts and coexistence of art and technology from the series of processes. The artists' studio, similar to the backstage of the show, is like a treasure room. In line with the special situation of Pandemics, the work of visualizing the anatomical process of the work and ideas through filming in an uneasy situation where the scheduled exhibition is quite uncertain to open, gave the technology media an opportunity to record and display the process of embodying through art one by one.

Followings are a couple of common rules. Participating artist was given 80cm by 80cm box to archive their work, and the research team is to prepare questions through basic research from the documents which are based on online and artist’s related files. In addition, these questions are concretized by online meetings with artists and curators. In parallel, another approach involves online archiving of around fifty Korean media artists as well. Artist interview relate to the archive is given in her/his studio. Professional camera team will shoot it for documentation.

The work of visualizing the "process" of art creation through different ways of sharing, preserving and recording has been not simple but interesting. The archive work of each artist transported from the studio to the museum space may also be considered another way to observe the various processes of artists involved behind the technology, or the protocols between technology and art. We expect that the exhibition will discover new perspective of approaching the work process of art, the approaches of artists along the technology, and the traces and processes of individual works that are fully covered by the changes in the past, present and future of technology.
